COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CAKE, FROZEN, INDIVIDUALLY PACKAGED
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has authorized the use of this Commercial Item
Description in lieu of Type II of Military Specification MIL-C-35075, Cake, Fresh,
Baked, and Cake, Frozen, Baked.
Salient Characteristics
The cake shall have been fully baked in a round pan, loaf pan or sheet pan, as specified in the contract agreement and individually packaged. It shall not be soggy or scorched and have a flavor characters tic of the particular type of cake and icing (specified). The cake and icing (if specified) shall not exhibit any cracks or dryness. If frosting is specified, it shall not adhere to the packaging material. When specified in the contract agreement, the cake shall contain fruits, candied fruits, chocolate pieces, candy pieces, walnuts, pecans, spices or coconut. After baking, the fresh cake shall be placed in a freezer ‘within 6 hours after baking and frozen to a maximum of O“F (-18”c) within 4 hours after being placed in the freezer. Age of frozen product “at time of shipment shall not exceed 45 days; shipping and storage temperature shall not exceed O“F (-18”c). The net weight of the cake shall be as specified in the contract agreement. All deliveries shall conform in ‘every respect to the provisions of the Federal Food, Drug; and l Cosmetic Act, and regulations promulgated thereunder.
Contractor’s Certification
The contractor shall certify that the product offered meets the salient characters tics of this Commercial Item Description; conforms to the producer’s own specifications and standards, including product characteristics, manufacturing procedures, quality control procedures and storage and handling practices; is the same product sold on the commercial market; has a national or regional” distribution from storage points located within the United States, its territories, and possessions; and is sold on the commercial market with commercial sales to the public predominating over sales to the U.S. Government. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to the first delivery. Thereafter, proof may be provided according to contract provisions.
Packaging
A. Commercial packaging. The cake shall be packaged in accordance with commercial practice. The package shall afford adequate protection against deterioration and physical damage during shipment from the supply source to the first consuming activity.
